Wandelzand

Wandelzand technical document Draft 1, 10-Apr-2013

1) What the app does

Note: everytime it says "image", it may actually be a series of images (a la animated gif), except for the splash screen.

  • user installs the app anywhere and launches it, sees the splash screen
  • user gets instructions image + audio on how to use the app, clicks OK
  • if user is in a pre-defined "app range", user gets instructions to go to first spot (museum)
  • otherwise if user is out of "app range", user sees instructions to travel to Ameland
  • for all 5 spots, including first spot, user can be "in range" (eg, within 100m radius) or "near" (eg, within 20m radius). The radius distances can vary on a spot by spot basis but "in range" is always a wider area than "near".
  • when user is "in range" of a spot, a loop plays
  • when user is "in range" but before being "near" a spot, user sees a "pre-spot" image
  • when user is "near" spot, user hears a story, sees story image
  • when user is "in range" after being "near" a spot, user sees a "post-spot" image
  • last loop keeps playing until user is "in range" of a new spot, or out of "app range"
  • after story of last spot, user gets a reward (eg, a download link) <- to be defined

2) Questions (stuff you can decide now or we can decide later):

  • should the instructions be shown only once or every time the app starts?
I think: everytime, most of the people will use once

  • do we force people to use headphones or is speaker OK too?
Speaker is OK, theoretically they share 1 iPhone (on speaker)

  • when the story plays, does the loop keep playing? I'd suggest lowering the volume on the loop and keeping it playing.
If that is possible thats nice
  • we discussed showing symbols when you're in range/near a spot, I think they can be "burned in" in the full screen images, so we don't need anything special for this?
I was thinking about that too, but also, should the be able to "REWIND" by interaction? So the better call the symbols buttons?

  • I'm not quite sure what should happen after the story has played. Should people see immediately see the instructions to go to the next spot? Or should they start walking a bit first?
Generally most of the intructions should be heard, but again: any change of using an on screen arrow with the compass?

  • animations and where they happen
  • do people still get the reward if they jump from spot #1 to spot #5 without visiting spots #2/#3/#4 ?
No! (or - then again - if that is to complex, the reward is just spot #6 close to the tower #5)

3) Media

DOWNLOAD ROUGH MEDIA (I DID MY (ALMOST) BEST) EXAMPLES NOW ABOVE AS .ZIP

List of media needed, with filenames to use.

Notes:

  • in general, no capitals in filenames (except for Default and Icon), spots are numbered 01 to 05
  • for every image, we need 3 versions in theory: 320x460 for non-Retina displays, 640x920 for Retina displays, 640x1096 for iPhone 5 (full screen with 20px cut off for status bar 40px in Retina). In practice, we will drop the iPhone 5 resolution and I will just center images on the iPhone 5 screen. One exception is the splash screen for which we will need 3 versions, and in full screen resolution (see below).
  • in summary: give me 640x920 images, preferrably as PhotoShop files or PNG's and I will generate what we need

a) Splash screen and app icon:

image: Default.png This one needs to be 640x960 actually. We will also need a 640x1136 version, named: Default-568h.png

icon image: Icon.png 512x512 px, no need to do the rounded corners or the shine

b) Instructions how to use the app

image: 00instructions00.png, 00instructions01.png, etc... (only the first one is required, others optional) audio: 00instructions.mp3

c) Instructions for when you're out of "app range"

image: 00outofrange00.png etc... audio: 00outofrange.mp3 (optional)

d) Instructions to go to first spot (museum)

image: 00start00.png etc... audio: 00start.mp3 (optional)

e) for each spot

  • spots are numbered 01 to 05
  • use spot number as prefix in file names

Media to play when user gets "in range" of the spot after coming from another spot (or from out of range):

image: prespot00.png etc... (so that would be for instance 01prespot00.png, 01prespot01.png, 01prespot02.png to show an animation of three images when within range of the first spot) audio: prespot00.mp3 <- will be looped if additional audio is provided, one will be picked at random, use names: prespot01.mp3. etc...

Media to play when "near"/at the spot:

image: atspot00.png etc... (so that would be for instance 01atspot00.png, 01atspot01.png, 01atspot02.png to show an animation of three images when near/at the first spot) audio: atspot00.mp3 <- story audio if additional audio is provided, one will be picked at random, use names: atspot01.mp3. etc...

Media to play when user is still "in range" of the spot coming from "near"/at the spot (that is, user is leaving the spot) (or maybe just immediately after story at the spot has played) image: postspot00.png etc... (so that would be for instance 01postspot00.png, 01postspot01.png, 01postspot02.png to show an animation of three images when leaving the first spot) audio: postpot00.mp3 <- will be looped (optional, prespot loop will be used otherwise) if additional audio is provided, one will be picked at random, use names: postspot01.mp3. etc...
